Receipts is a digital news and information platform operated by Parallel LLC, doing business as Receipts (“Receipts,” “we,” “us,” or “our”).

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you visit readreceipts.fyi, create an account, submit content, communicate with us, or otherwise use any website, application, feature, product, or service that links to this Privacy Policy collectively, the “Services.”

By using the Services, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect

The information we collect depends on how you use the Services.

Information You Provide

We may collect information you provide directly to us, including:

  • Your name, username, email address, password, profile image, biography, and other account information.
  • Stories, articles, links, documents, photographs, videos, recordings, comments, messages, corrections, tips, source materials, and other content you submit.
  • Information included in applications to become a contributor, journalist, moderator, partner, or other participant.
  • Communications you send to us, including support requests, feedback, disputes, legal notices, and requests concerning your privacy.
  • Newsletter preferences, followed stories, saved content, notification settings, and other preferences.
  • Payment, subscription, or transaction information if we introduce paid products or services. Payment card information may be collected and processed directly by a third-party payment provider rather than stored by Receipts.
  • Any other information you voluntarily provide.

Information Collected Automatically

When you use the Services, we and our service providers may automatically collect information such as:

  • Internet Protocol address.
  • Browser type, device type, operating system, and device identifiers.
  • Approximate location inferred from your IP address.
  • Referring pages, exit pages, and links you visit.
  • Pages, stories, sources, videos, and features you view or interact with.
  • Search activity, session duration, timestamps, and navigation patterns.
  • Advertising and analytics identifiers.
  • Cookie, local storage, pixel, software development kit, and similar technology data.
  • Diagnostic information, crash reports, performance data, and security logs.

Information From Other Sources

We may receive information from:

  • Social networks or identity providers when you connect or sign in through a third-party account.
  • News organizations, publishers, public records, government sources, company announcements, journalists, contributors, and publicly available websites.
  • Partners, service providers, analytics providers, advertising providers, fraud-prevention providers, and data vendors.
  • Other users who submit content that references or concerns you.
  • Publicly available social media posts, videos, documents, websites, and online discussions.

Information appearing within a news story, public record, source document, or user submission may not be treated in the same manner as account information, particularly when its publication serves a journalistic, informational, archival, or public-interest purpose.

2. How We Use Information

We may use information to:

  • Provide, operate, maintain, and improve the Services.
  • Create and manage user accounts.
  • Publish, organize, update, contextualize, and preserve news stories and source materials.
  • Allow users to submit stories, evidence, corrections, commentary, and other content.
  • Attribute content to contributors when appropriate.
  • Personalize feeds, recommendations, followed stories, notifications, and other features.
  • Analyze readership, engagement, traffic, and product performance.
  • Identify emerging stories, duplicate reports, coordinated activity, spam, misinformation, and platform abuse.
  • Review content for accuracy, safety, authenticity, legal compliance, and adherence to our policies.
  • Use artificial intelligence and automated systems to summarize, classify, translate, organize, moderate, recommend, or otherwise process content.
  • Generate audio, video, social media, or other versions of stories and content.
  • Communicate with you about your account, submissions, updates, security, support requests, and changes to our policies.
  • Send newsletters, alerts, and promotional communications where permitted by law.
  • Conduct research and develop new products, services, and features.
  • Protect the rights, safety, security, and integrity of Receipts, our users, sources, partners, and the public.
  • Detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, unauthorized access, harmful conduct, and violations of our terms.
  • Comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
  • Establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
  • Carry out any other purpose disclosed when information is collected or with your consent.

We may aggregate or de-identify information so that it can no longer reasonably be associated with you. We may use and disclose aggregated or de-identified information for research, analytics, business, product-development, and other lawful purposes.

3. Artificial Intelligence

Receipts may use artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other automated systems to help:

  • Summarize and explain news stories.
  • Identify related stories and sources.
  • Organize events into timelines.
  • Compare claims with supporting materials.
  • Detect potentially misleading, harmful, duplicate, or low-quality content.
  • Recommend stories and topics.
  • Translate or reformat content.
  • Generate headlines, scripts, narration, audio, video, graphics, and social media content.
  • Assist moderators, editors, contributors, and other personnel.

These systems may process information you submit and information obtained from public or third-party sources.

We may use third-party artificial intelligence providers to perform these functions. When we do, information may be transmitted to and processed by those providers under contractual or technical restrictions appropriate to the service being provided.

We do not guarantee that automated outputs will always be complete or accurate. Important editorial, moderation, or account decisions may involve human review where appropriate.

Unless we clearly state otherwise at the time of collection, we will not intentionally use your private account credentials, private communications, or nonpublic identity-verification documents to train a publicly available general-purpose artificial intelligence model.

4. User Submissions and Public Information

The Services may allow you to submit content for publication or distribution. Content you designate as public may be visible to anyone and may be:

  • Indexed by search engines.
  • Shared on social media.
  • Quoted, summarized, translated, or embedded in other stories.
  • Included in timelines, archives, newsletters, videos, or other media.
  • Copied or redistributed by people outside our control.

Do not submit private, confidential, legally protected, or sensitive information unless you are authorized to do so and understand how it may be used.

Submitting a tip or source material does not automatically create a confidential source relationship, attorney-client relationship, or other privileged relationship. When Receipts expressly offers a designated confidential submission process, separate terms or disclosures may apply.

We may retain public-interest content, published stories, source histories, corrections, and moderation records even after an account is deleted when reasonably necessary for journalistic integrity, historical preservation, dispute resolution, security, legal compliance, or the protection of others.

5. Cookies and Similar Technologies

We and our service providers may use cookies, pixels, local storage, software development kits, and similar technologies to:

  • Keep you signed in.
  • Remember your settings and preferences.
  • Provide security and prevent fraud.
  • Measure traffic and engagement.
  • Understand how the Services are used.
  • Improve performance and functionality.
  • Personalize content and recommendations.
  • Measure or deliver advertising, where applicable.

You may be able to control cookies through your browser or device settings. Blocking certain technologies may prevent parts of the Services from functioning properly.

Where required by law, we will provide additional cookie controls or obtain consent before using nonessential cookies.

6. How We Disclose Information

Service Providers

We may disclose information to vendors that provide hosting, cloud storage, databases, analytics, content delivery, artificial intelligence, video generation, transcription, email, communications, customer support, identity verification, security, moderation, payment processing, and other services.

Other Users and the Public

Information associated with public profiles, posts, comments, bylines, stories, source materials, or other public activity may be visible to other users and the general public.

Publishers, Contributors, and Partners

We may disclose information when working with journalists, publishers, contributors, fact-checkers, researchers, licensors, distribution partners, and other organizations involved in creating, verifying, publishing, or distributing content.

Advertising and Analytics Partners

We may disclose device, usage, cookie, and interaction information to analytics and advertising partners. Depending on the laws that apply to you, certain advertising activities may be considered the “sale,” “sharing,” or use of personal information for targeted advertising, even when no money is exchanged.

Where required, we will provide a method to opt out of these activities.

Business Transactions

We may disclose information in connection with an investment, financing, merger, acquisition, reorganization, bankruptcy, sale of assets, or other actual or proposed business transaction.

Legal, Safety, and Enforcement Purposes

We may disclose information when we believe doing so is reasonably necessary to:

7. Sale and Targeted Advertising

Receipts does not sell personal information in exchange for money.

We may use analytics, advertising, or social media technologies that involve disclosing identifiers, device information, or usage activity to third parties. Some privacy laws may define these disclosures as a “sale,” “sharing,” or targeted advertising.

We will process legally recognized browser-based opt-out preference signals where required by applicable law and technically feasible.

Receipts does not knowingly sell or share the personal information of children under 16 for targeted advertising.

8. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to:

  • Provide the Services.
  • Maintain your account.
  • Fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.
  • Preserve published stories, sourcing histories, corrections, and public-interest records.
  • Comply with legal, accounting, contractual, and reporting obligations.
  • Resolve disputes and enforce agreements.
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents.

Retention periods vary depending on the type of information, why it was collected, whether it was made public, and applicable legal requirements.

When information is no longer reasonably required, we may delete, anonymize, or securely isolate it.

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We therefore cannot guarantee absolute security.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for notifying us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised.

You may unsubscribe from promotional emails by using the unsubscribe link included in the message. We may still send transactional or administrative communications concerning your account, submissions, security, or the Services.

Notifications

You may manage certain notifications through your account, browser, or device settings.

Cookies

You may control certain cookies through your browser settings and any cookie-management tool we make available.

Public Content

You may request deletion or correction of content you submitted. We may decline or limit a request when retaining the content is reasonably necessary for journalistic, archival, security, legal, public-interest, or integrity purposes.

11. U.S. State Privacy Rights

Depending on your state of residence and whether the applicable law covers Receipts, you may have the right to:

  • Confirm whether we process your personal information.
  • Access personal information we maintain about you.
  • Correct inaccurate personal information.
  • Request deletion of personal information.
  • Obtain a portable copy of certain personal information.
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.
  • Opt out of targeted advertising.
  • Opt out of certain profiling or automated decision-making activities.
  • Limit certain uses of sensitive personal information.
  • Appeal our decision concerning a privacy request.
  • Receive equal service without unlawful discrimination for exercising your rights.

These rights may be subject to exceptions, including exceptions concerning journalistic activity, public information, freedom of expression, legal compliance, security, fraud prevention, and the rights of others.

We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. Verification may require information sufficient to match you with our records. You may use an authorized agent where permitted by law, but we may require proof of the agent’s authority and verification of your identity.

We will respond within the period required by applicable law. If we deny your request, you may have the right to appeal by replying to our decision or contacting support@readreceipts.fyi.

California Residents

California residents may have additional rights concerning the categories of personal information we collect, the sources from which it is obtained, the purposes for which it is used, and the categories of parties to which it is disclosed.

The categories described in this Privacy Policy may include:

  • Identifiers.
  • Customer-record information.
  • Internet or electronic-network activity.
  • Approximate geolocation information.
  • Professional or employment information.
  • User-generated content.

12. Users Outside the United States

Receipts is operated from the United States. If you use the Services from another country, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States and other jurisdictions whose privacy laws may differ from those in your country.

Where the laws of the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or a similar jurisdiction apply, our legal bases for processing may include:

  • Performance of a contract with you.
  • Compliance with legal obligations.
  • Our legitimate interests in operating, securing, improving, and reporting through the Services.
  • Consent where required.
  • Protection of vital interests.
  • Activities carried out for journalistic, academic, artistic, literary, archival, or public-interest purposes where recognized by law.

Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, object to, or obtain a copy of your personal information, and to withdraw consent.

13. Children’s Privacy

The Services are intended for a general audience and are not directed to children under 13.

We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13 without legally required parental consent. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to us, contact us at support@readreceipts.fyi so we can review and address the situation.

Users must meet any minimum-age requirement stated in our Terms of Service.

14. Third-Party Websites and Services

The Services may link to or embed news articles, social media posts, videos, advertisements, websites, applications, and services operated by third parties.

We do not control the privacy or security practices of those third parties. Their collection and use of information are governed by their own policies, not this Privacy Policy.

15. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically.

When we make changes, we will revise the effective date at the top of the policy. If the changes are material, we may provide additional notice through the Services, by email, or through another appropriate method.

Your continued use of the Services after an updated policy becomes effective signifies your acknowledgment of the updated policy.
